GRUNWALD MONUMENT
The 15th July 1910 the Grunwald Monument was unveiled to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the victory of the combined Polish and Lithuanian forces over the Teutonic Knights.
On the top of monument there is a sculpture of polish king Wladyslaw Jagiello , on his horse. At the front the Lithuanian prince Vitold, who is flanked on both sides by soldiers from the joint army. The dead man at the front is Urlich von Jungingen, the Teutonic Order’s Grand Master, who lost his life during the battle.
During the second world war the monument was destroyed by the Nazis, and returned to the square as a faithful copy only in 1976.
This monument means a lot for us Poles as it reminds us how brave we can be as a nation 🙂
