REMU SYNAGOGUE

REMU SYNAGOGUE

The Remuh Synagogue   is a very unique place  with an amazing atmosphere.

It is also a great example of Jewish architecture and sacred art from the mid-16th century. What makes the place even more extraordinary is the fact that  this synagogue is the only place of prayer  with regular services.

Speaking of history this is the second synagogue built  in Kazimierz, after the Old Synagogue , in the middle of the 16th century by the royal banker Isaac Yekeles, father of Moses Isserles, most probably served as a house of prayer for a founder’s family and friends.

The synagogue was robbed of its  major valuables and most of its furnishings were destroyed. After the end of the war, the synagogue returned to the Jewish Religious Community of Kraków and  underwent a thorough renovation.

When we enter the synagogue we may admire centrally situated rectangular bimah with a reconstructed wrought -iron enclosure , the late Renaissance style  Holy Ark with Art Nouveau door and Ner Tamid – the  eternal light , located next to the ark ,  which symbolizes  the presence of God.

I absolutely recommend to visit the place!  When you come to Kraków I will take you there 🙂
