SZYMBORSKA’S DRAWER

SZYMBORSKA’S DRAWER

On 1st February 2013, the first anniversary of the death of Wisława Szymborska, the exhibition Szymborska’s Drawer has been opened at Szołayski House, a Department of the National Museum in Krakow

The Nobel Prize in Literature 1996 was awarded to Wislawa Szymborska “for poetry that with ironic precision allows the historical and biological context to come to light in fragments of human reality.”

“Szymborska’s Drawer” – neither a reconstruction of her flat, nor a memorial chamber, but rather an interior arranged in the somewhat surreal spirit so dear to the poet’s heart – says Zofia Gołubiew, Director of the National Museum in Krakow.

The exhibition presents the poet’s belongings , photographs of people, places and things, inviting the visitor into her private world of poetry and inspiration.

There is also a great collection of masks, old postcards, souvenirs and curiosities, which she gathered as her personal treasures.

All of the exhibits may, though just partially, help us understand how , some of her poems came into existence , what might have been their sources, or where they have been anchored.

The name of the exhibition derives from one of Szymborska’s statements , when she said that drawers were her favorite types of furniture.

Admission to the exhibition is free of charge and it is opened until 30th December 2019.

Just come and see it is a special place!
