THE EAGLE PHARMACY

THE EAGLE PHARMACY

Tadeusz Pankiewicz’s  Eagle Pharmacy was located within the limits of the former  Jewish ghetto area as the only one non-Jewish  enterprise.

The existence  of the  polish pharmacy in Jewish ghetto was something unusual in all of occupied Europe. Since the very beginning it became a kind of a “free  piece  of land”  some people  even used to call it Switzerland.

Both Jews and German officers went there but once they met inside there was no aggression , no fight  like it wouldn’t be appropriate …

The Pharmacy became a meeting spot for artistic and intellectual elite of the Ghetto. During such numerous meetings  news from the front was shared, orders were commented, clandestine press was read and other everyday matters were discussed. Even dinners to the music by the brothers Rosner were arranged there.

It was also a contact point where one could transfer news, letters or money and collect them.

Tadeszu Pankiewicz and 3 ladies who used to work there were helping people as much as they could , day by day throughout 2 years of existence of ghetto.

Tadeusz Pankiewicz became a Righteous among the Nations and his Pharmacy became a Museum which commemorates the Holocaust of Krakow’s Jews.

This museum is really small but  memories gathered and described  by its exibits  are of a huge value and tell us a true story of  a periof of time  between March 1941- March 1943 and people who lived here.

I hope someday I will have a chance to take you there!
