PLANTY PARK AND THE HOLY SPIRIT SQUARE
The Holy Spirit Square used to be a place densely covered with many structures both of secular and religious functions.
There used to be a Church of the Holy Spirit, which was connected to a monastery that used to house a hospital run by the Canons of the Holy Spirit De Saxia, locally known as “Duchacy”. This precious complex of mediaeval buildings was demolished in 1892-1893 by a decision of the City Council to make room for the development of the future municipal theatre. Currently known as Juliusz Słowacki theatre being a great example of an eclectic architecture.
Luckily, the Gothic Church of the Holy Cross was saved and we may still admire its pure beauty! It was erected in the 14th century and is an absolute pearl of a gothic sacral architecture.
The square is under renovation now and soon shall have its new green costume with alleys, benches and trees!
