THE MAIN MARKET SQUARE
Krakow’s Main Market Square being the largest medieval square in Europe, measuring approximately 200 metres by 200 metres, was laid out when the city received its charter in 1257.
It is surrounded by over 40 colourful townhouses and mansions , all with their own unique names, histories and curiosities.
Splendid facades with attics , numerous embellishments and architectural details are simply a great feast for our eyes.
Gothic churches with their Gothic spires, Baroque steeples and copulas quite often embellished with gilded elements.
Countless Renaissance portals with coat of arms or emblems of noble citizens of Kraków are absolutely magnificent.
Krakow’s architecture has been shaped over centuries by prominent artists who used to come to our city, stayed here and created their masterpieces.
We may find here examples of structures of all the styles, starting from Romanesque style ending with Modern style and its sophisticated structures.
Therefore it shouldn’t be surprising that Old Town of Krakow was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1978.
